How to Import Your Manga List From MAL, AniList, MangaDex & More

Published March 27, 2026 · 11 min read

The biggest barrier to switching manga trackers isn't the new platform — it's the fear of losing your reading progress. If you've spent years building a library of 200+ series on MyAnimeList or AniList, starting over from scratch on a new tracker is a non-starter.

That's why MangaTrack supports full library imports from every major platform. Your chapter progress, reading status, scores, and completion data transfer over completely — no manual re-entry required.

Here's a step-by-step guide for importing from each platform.

Supported Import Sources

PlatformFormatData ImportedMatch Rate
MyAnimeListXML exportStatus, chapter, score, dates~98%
AniListJSON / APIStatus, chapter, score, custom lists~97%
MangaDexAPI (follows)Followed series, reading status~99%
KenmeiCSV exportStatus, chapter, source URLs~90%
Generic CSVCSV fileTitle, chapter, status, score~85%

Importing From MyAnimeList (MAL)

MAL's XML export is the most universal format in manga tracking. Here's how to get your data out and into MangaTrack:

1

Export from MAL

Log in to MyAnimeList → Click your username (top right) → Account Settings → Go to the “Import/Export” section (under “Misc”) → Click “Export” and select “Manga List.” Download the XML file.

2

Upload to MangaTrack

In MangaTrack → Settings → Import → Select “MyAnimeList” as the source → Upload your XML file.

3

Review & Confirm

MangaTrack matches titles using MAL IDs (highest accuracy) and fuzzy title matching. Review the preview — matched series show green, unmatched show yellow. Confirm to finalize.

What gets imported from MAL:

  • Reading status (Reading, Completed, On Hold, Dropped, Plan to Read)
  • Chapter progress (exact chapter number)
  • Volume progress
  • Score (10-point scale)
  • Start and end dates (if recorded)
  • Re-read count

Importing From AniList

AniList offers two import methods — JSON file and direct API sync:

Method 1: JSON Export

Go to AniList → Settings → Account → scroll to “Export” → click “Export Lists.” This downloads a JSON file with your complete anime and manga lists. Upload this JSON to MangaTrack — it automatically filters for manga entries only.

Method 2: Username Sync

If your AniList profile is public, you can enter your AniList username in MangaTrack's import tool. MangaTrack uses the AniList GraphQL API to fetch your manga list directly — no file download needed.

What gets imported from AniList:

  • Reading status (including custom list categories)
  • Chapter and volume progress
  • Score (converted from AniList's scoring format to 10-point)
  • Start/end dates
  • Notes and tags (if present)
  • Re-read count

Importing From MangaDex

MangaDex doesn't have a traditional “export” feature, but MangaTrack can sync your followed series via the MangaDex API:

  • Enter your MangaDex username or authenticate via MangaDex OAuth
  • MangaTrack fetches your followed series and reading status
  • Since MangaTrack uses MangaDex IDs internally, the match rate is nearly 100%

This is the fastest import method — MangaDex follows sync almost instantly because there's no title matching needed.

Importing From Kenmei

Kenmei supports CSV export from Settings → Export. The CSV includes series titles, chapter progress, and source URLs. Upload this CSV to MangaTrack and titles are matched using fuzzy title matching and source URL analysis.

Match rates for Kenmei imports are typically ~90% because Kenmei uses source-site titles which may differ from canonical titles in MangaDex or AniList. Any unmatched entries are flagged for manual resolution.

Importing From Any CSV

If your tracker supports CSV export (or if you maintain a spreadsheet), MangaTrack accepts generic CSV files. Required columns:

  • Title (required) — series name in English, Japanese, or Romaji
  • Chapter (optional) — current chapter number
  • Status (optional) — Reading, Completed, On Hold, Dropped, or Plan to Read
  • Score (optional) — numeric score (any scale, auto-converted to 10-point)

The CSV importer uses fuzzy title matching with a confidence threshold — high-confidence matches are auto-imported, low-confidence matches are flagged for manual review.

What Happens After Import?

Once your library is imported, MangaTrack immediately:

  • Syncs chapter data — your series connect to MangaDex's real-time chapter feed, so you'll see new releases automatically
  • Calculates initial XP — you earn retroactive XP for all chapters already read, giving you a starting level from day one
  • Populates reading links — community-submitted reading links appear for every series in your library
  • Generates your public profile — your stats, badges, and activity appear on your profile URL immediately
  • Enables notifications — new chapter alerts are active for all “Reading” series

Troubleshooting Common Import Issues

Some series didn't match

This usually happens with alternative titles, fan-translated names, or very niche series. Unmatched entries appear in a review queue where you can manually search and match them.

Chapter numbers don't align

Different platforms may use different chapter numbering. MangaTrack uses MangaDex chapter numbering as the canonical source. After import, you can manually adjust any misaligned chapter counts.

Duplicate entries

If a series exists in your library and also appears in the import, MangaTrack detects the duplicate and keeps the version with more progress (higher chapter count). You can review conflicts before confirming.

Import is slow for large libraries

Libraries with 500+ series may take a few minutes to process due to title matching. The import runs in the background — you can use MangaTrack normally while it processes.

Do You Need to Leave Your Current Tracker?

No. Importing to MangaTrack doesn't delete your data on MAL, AniList, or any other platform. Many readers keep their MAL or AniList account for anime tracking and use MangaTrack exclusively for manga. The library organization guide has tips for managing a consolidated library after import.
